• We as a species measure the years in centuries. Presently we are over a decade into the twenty-first century. Even so, our past beleaguers us.

Humanity has made great strides. Our technological wit has tamed rivers, floods, and many of the diseases that in the past meant certain death. From our magnificent road systems to our marvelous flying machines, humankind has accomplished much in the way of uniting ourselves, shrinking our world.

America, specifically, the United States, has led much of the way in these advancements, improving the quality of life for all. Unfortunately, America’s place at the lead is in jeopardy. We are figuratively hamstrung, or at the very least encumbered by a weighty ball and chain. This impediment, this shame, carries the name “Fundamental Christianity”.

    Our shame:

    • The Discovery Institute continues to hold seminars espousing Intelligent Design or advocating the concept of “Teaching the Controversy”. They do have this right in America, the land of the free, to do so. What is worrisome is the numbers. Such events are enjoying packed houses.
    • The Creation Museum near Petersburg, Kentucky. Some people attend this museum out of curiosity, I did. What is worrisome, is the numbers. Their parking lot is full most days. Despite the fact that attendance has not been what it was in the past, eliminating their dream of building another facility expounding on Noah’s Ark, they are still doing well.
    • Individuals from the Discovery Institute are making assertions about science, especially evolution, without any credentials from which to do so. Laypeople are listening and accepting their message. Despite the fact that credentialed scientists have debunked the messages from the Discovery Instituted makes no difference to those who wish to “believe” otherwise.

Compromised school boards, like the recent Dover, Pennsylvania school board, having been infiltrated by fundamentalist Christians, buy into the unfounded assertions by the Discovery Institute, that evolution is “just a theory”, not fact. Thankfully such actions to “teach the controversy” have been averted, so far.

These events, taking place in what has been the technological leader of the world, the United States, are viewed by the rest of the developed world with bewilderment. Restrained by these development impediments, the United States has been outstripped by countries facing no such opposition to technological achievement.

What is worrisome, is the numbers. People who, unaware, uneducated, buying into the lies promulgated by equally ignorant proponents, are great in number. Many of these unaware people do not even know the ramifications of that which they support. Will the numbers of those who are aware, educated, be enough to deflect us from this path that could ultimately lead America to third world status? Or will those people who see the ultimate destination, the decline, instead flee to better, more receptive climes? Imagine a United States bereft of the scientists, the innovators, which have given us the bounty we daily enjoy.

Some are wont to dismiss this concern as simply an over-reaction. Yet we see this issue as a daily battle, a battle between science, reason, aligned against the forces of ignorance. It takes place in our courts in the form of cases of violations by the “righteous” of the Separation of Church and State. It continues as the minorities in this country resist the efforts by the majority to impose its beliefs upon the masses. We presently stand, stalemated, protected by the few organizations which exist that use the courts and laws of the land. How long we stand, so protected, depends upon our vigilance.

  • What is wrong with supporting the sanctity of life? Absolutely nothing! Life is a precious commodity despite the overpopulation of the earth.

Presently, the planet earth is the only place where life is known to exist. If the scientists are correct, and I think they are, then life’s presence on this planet is the result of a complex struggle. Life had to adapt to the planet’s environmental offerings. Those who exist today are winners, though they may be gone tomorrow amidst some ongoing change in environment. Those that came before and are no longer, failed to adapt to changing climate, or had their unique environment, their niche, destroyed by natural circumstance or the unnatural intervention of human beings.

Humans have been overwhelmingly successful in the area of procreation. Recently the population numbers of human beings have reached the 7 billion mark. Humans are a recent result of the evolution of primates. Their immense mental capabilities nearly always guarantee a win in the struggle for survival. Humans have a consciousness that is unrivaled among the life forms present on earth. It would be a great loss to the universe if we were to come up missing.

A loss to who? Humans are a construction from materials generated in the furnaces of enormous stars that exploded millennia ago. The materials, the heavy elements, generated by these exploding giants made the rocky planets, like earth, what they are. The universe we know is composed of these stars, gas planets, and rocky planets, like earth. From the looks of it, what made us exists universe-wide. Life arose by yet undiscovered natural processes from these materials. Increment by increment life emerged and became the complex shapes and forms present today. We are part of and represent the universe. It can rightly be said that, at least in this part of this galaxy, we are the universe become conscious. It would be a shame and a loss for humanity to disappear.

What makes life precious? The answer to this is: Quality of life.

Presently our planet is overpopulated. Seven billion people are too many and are ravaging the planet. All other species are at risk as humans relentlessly expand their domain into every available niche.

This particular rant of mine was prompted by yet another letter to the editor of the local newspaper here. The title is “Pray for all the children, even the unborn who die every day”. It reads as follows:

New Year’s resolutions are being made  by many people—all with good intentions.

How about putting on your list the effort to be more positive about the right to life—all life? (It’s never too late to start.)

The anniversary date of Roe vs. Wade’s Supreme Court decision is this month. As you know, this ruling made it legal to kill the unborn, which doesn’t say much for our society.

We all know how the tragedy of the Connecticut shootings affected so many people, especially the parents and families of those 20 children who lost their lives. I can’t possibly imagine how I would react or feel in losing one of my children, especially in this manner. This tragedy resounded throughout this country and the world.

The courage and outcry from the media was tremendous and continued for several weeks.

Where is the outcry when it concerns the 2,600 babies who are killed by abortion every day?

Why doesn’t the news media report this with the same outrage and passion?

Think about that for a moment, then maybe you can add that to your list of resolutions—to help in the fight for all life.

Let us all pray for an end to the tragedy of abortion, the senseless murder of innocent children. Peace to all.

                                                                 signed Barbara

This is one of many voices asking for the power to force others to obey what they think is the right way to live. In their world there are no grays. There are only whites and blacks, on or offs, no’s or yes’s. People like this do not actually imagine that should Roe vs. Wade be revoked that abortion would end. People like this know full well that the procedure will continue under illegal and unsafe means. These people know there will be suffering as a result of such a ban, and the truth is, they do not care! Under the guise of expressing concern, care, they are instead exercising extreme cruelty. This is religion, however, strict, unchanging, uncaring.

The planet’s beyond capacity now, Barbara. Again, though, it is religion. Those steeped in the doctrine do not care about the suffering, do not care about the environment, and certainly do not care about the other species that share this planet. They have but one thing on their minds, if you can call it minds, and that is … God’s will.

These thimble-minded cretins not only oppose abortion, but in many instances oppose all contraception to curtail population growth. They also oppose any effort to preserve the environment for future generations as they have always felt “God’s a’ comin’ any day now.” What need have we for a nice environment when God’s return will fix everything quite nice, thank you.

As I said, this voice was one of many. They have the majority. They can do it. No amount of reason or logic will dissuade them, as they gave up on that long ago.

  • Accept:

1.to take or receive (something offered); receive with approval or favor: to accept a present; to accept a proposal.

2.to agree or consent to; accede to: to accept a treaty; to accept an apology.

3.to respond or answer affirmatively to: to accept an invitation.

4.to undertake the responsibility, duties, honors, etc., of: to accept the office of president.

5.to receive or admit formally, as to a college or club.

    Believe:

1.to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without absolute proof that one is right in doing so: Only if one believes in something can one act purposefully.

    verb (used with object)

2.to have confidence or faith in the truth of (a positive assertion, story, etc.); give credence to.

3.to have confidence in the assertions of (a person).

4.to have a conviction that (a person or thing) is, has been, or will be engaged in a given action or involved in a given situation: The fugitive is believed to be headed for the Mexican border.

5.to suppose or assume; understand (usually followed by a noun clause): I believe that he has left town.

Evolution, with its abundance of evidence, is a fact. Nevertheless, there are those who ask “Do you believe in Evolution?” I accede to the truthfulness of Evolution as backed by the immense volumes of evidence supporting it. I accept it. Anyone who believes in Evolution has not examined it. Creationism and Intelligent Design possesses no evidence to back it and can only be believed in as it cannot be examined.

One accepts or rejects evolution while one believes or disbelieves in god.

Evolution is a proven fact. You accept it or you reject it. If you reject it, it still remains true. Creationism and Intelligent Design possesses no evidence. To accept it does not change the fact that it possesses no evidence. It remains without evidence.

Does this make evidence for god’s non-existence? As is often repeated, absence of evidence does not make evidence of absence.

In this nation, the United States, when one says god, it usually refers to the Christian god. When the history of Christianity is examined it can be deduced that it is a fabrication. This god, it can be said, is an invention. All of the gods of humankind can be eliminated in this fashion.

Does this make evidence for a god’s non-existence? This is at present untestable. The truth of this matter cannot be determined. All that can be said for sure is that there has been no evidence found for its existence.

Does this make all atheists in reality agnostics? No, not to the gods invented by humankind. Only in the case of some unknown god can atheists be said to be somewhat agnostic. I will grant such a possibility, that of some unknown god’s existence, a small .01 percent possibility. Arbitrary perhaps, but then I can proclaim myself 99.99 percent pure atheist. A .01 percent agnostic leaning can be dismissed as irrelevant. Okay?

  • Christianity is finished.

Some religious people maintain that to accept the Theory of Evolution as true is to also accept atheism.

This is not necessarily so. While the Theory of Evolution, which is, by the way, a fact, invalidates many of the assertions of the Bible, it does not in fact eliminate the possibility of some deity somewhere. Abiogenesis eliminates the need for a deity to have begun life here on earth, though it does not explain the origin of the Universe. Evolution and abiogenesis are not the same thing. To accept the fact that evolution is true does not require acceptance of abiogenesis, which has not yet been proven in any form. It is most likely that abiogenesis in some form is true, but, to repeat, no order of its procession and no evidence of its occurrence has been derived to date. (Which does not mean we are free to make up stuff).

This leaves an avenue through which the truth of evolution can be accepted and yet, for those weak of will and mind, keep the possibility of a God of some sort still available.

Unfortunately, like many of those Gods humankind has invented, evolution relegates Christianity to the God scrapheap of history.

Even the geological and fossil evidence is incompatible with Christianity. In the end, even reality is incompatible with Christianity. The Bible, by examining Genesis, states the earth is between 6000 and 7000 years old. Yet, evidence taken from tree rings, including petrified tree ring studies, can go back at least 11,000 years. Ice layers at or near the poles can be counted back nearly 800,000 years. Despite the outcries from fundamentalist Christians, the radioactive decay studies accurately measure that millions of years have passed on this earth.

Except in circles shrouded in ignorance, shielded from the truth of modern science, Christianity is finished. It is amazing that such a flimsy house of cards has stood this long. If not for the gullible and the weak-minded it would have folded long ago.

  • Genesis 2:16–17

16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 …but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Preconditions: For the sake of this post we shall pretend that this God, the one of the Bible, exists.

    God

Why did God object to Adam and Eve having knowledge of evil?

There are many who say that if He didn’t want his new creation to know the knowledge of good and evil, why did He put the tree of such knowledge in the Garden of Eden to tempt them. The answer is that He wanted to test their loyalty, or so it is said. He wanted them to choose between obeying and disobeying. Of course, being Omniscient, He already knew the choice they would make. So, why the test? An omniscient God eliminates the existence of free will. Things will play out in sequence. So, presuming God didn’t know how they would choose, can we also presume that though Christians claim their God is omniscient, He is not.

Let’s proceed on that line of thought, i.e., that God is not, was not, omniscient. Why put it there, the tree, and forbid his innocent creations from consuming its delicious fruit? He must have truly wanted to know if they would obey Him. He also must have known that even without the magic tree they would eventually develop a knowledge of good and evil. They were, after all, created in the image of God. God evidently had knowledge of good and evil, right? God created everything, He said, good and evil included. Without knowledge of evil He couldn’t have done such a bang-up job creating it.

It is clear that God would have preferred that His two little creatures choose not to partake in the fruit of the tree of knowledge. He knew that to withhold such knowledge would have been futile in any case. Why did He prefer humans not have such knowledge?

Perhaps He was afraid. God-almighty afraid? Well, obviously, since He didn’t know everything, as demonstrated by His desire to test Adam and Eve, He may have not been so powerful, either. Maybe He figured out that these creatures, having been endowed with God-like powers of intellect, might come to the conclusion that He was not as good as advertised. They might learn of His exploits, of His true nature, and in time (gasp) judge Him! They might discover just how imperfect a God they worship and cease to follow His dictates.

The crimes of God, in light of modern human thinking, is a lengthy list.  From baby killer to genocidal maniac, destroying entire races. God is not the lovable old man with a white beard as depicted in paintings or bedtime stories. A court would certainly condemn such a felon to an eternity in some dank and dark gulag. Compared to God even Satan is a near saint. After all, it is Satan that God knew would eventually give humankind the knowledge he had forbidden. God killed millions, as documented in the holy book, supposedly inspired by God Himself.

Satan meanwhile, is credited with very few deaths in comparison, maybe 10 to 30, and usually those due to bets placed by God. “I surely bet Job will never break” spoke God. “How much you wanna bet” Satan replied. “I’ll give you central air-conditioning in your flat if Job breaks” answers God, fingering his chin. How else to explain the persecution committed upon a loyal follower such as Job other than a mere whim or wager. This certainly would not prompt anyone to follow too closely the edicts of God for fear of being tested, having your family annihilated, then replaced with some strangers.

Whoever made this all up did a shoddy job, didn’t they? We have to remember though, the Bible consists of many books written by many authors and over time it has had books deleted and added, alterations made, and the people responsible tried the best they could to piece the whole thing together into a coherent story. Their best efforts failed.

  • I suppose the answer to this question is clear. Why do christians (yes, I am aware that I did not capitalize the word christian) proselytize? Christianity in and of itself is a powerful mental virus. It can make its adherents do some very strange things, we must admit.

    virus b

As a virus it has the need to spread to new hosts. Once instilled within its host, it urges its host to go forth and spread the infection via proselytizing. In fact, they are made to believe that the ultimate goal of this belief will not be realized until such time as everyone has been infected, or at least exposed, to the contagion.

Here are some of the reasons a christian is likely to give:

    1. Jesus told us to.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven he gave his followers this reminder, “This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.” Luke 24:47-49.

    2. It’s good news!

The word gospel actually means “good news.” It’s the ultimate good news that Jesus died in our place for our sins and that through simple faith in him we have the gift of eternal life. As Romans 10:14,15 reminds us, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent?”

    3. It saves people from hell.bible

The Bible makes it clear that those who die without believing the gospel message go to hell. The apostle John put it rather bluntly in John 3:36, “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on him.”

So, it’s convert, or die. Simple and concise, black or white, no grays in between. See the light or forever remain in the dark. Accept and gain life immortal, reject and receive death immortal. Only the Sith deal in absolutes.

    Balderdash!

Over the years I have been threatened numerous times with hell eternal by “wonderful” christians citing dreary passages from their holy tome. It seems they do not understand fully when you explain to them that you do not believe in any of it. They spout their threats and seem to pause, expecting, it seems, some kind of display of fear or angst about what they have spewed. For many of these poor wretched victims of the mind virus it is baffling when no fear or angst is forthcoming. Then, when you begin to undermine the foundation of their beliefs by citing facts of your own, accrued by honest study, you transform into a leper, from which they cannot retreat quickly enough. The truth, it seems, causes a flight response to be issued by the viral meme.

What can you do to make it clear that you do not want their “kind” advances? How do you politely tell them that their lives have been wasted in service to a cause, a creator, which does not exist? These well-meaning automatons of god need enlightenment. Like the fingernail being dragged on the chalkboard these people persist.

    cow eyesvending machine coin

Without physically removing the cow-like eye of one of these servants of Jeebus with my carefully placed thumb, how can I otherwise impart my irritation upon receiving repetitive beseeches to submit or die. I have tried a kindly “no thank you”. Most often that results in the reflexive proffering of christian material in the form of tracts, as if “no thank you” was a coin inserted into a vending machine slot.

So, in desperation, I sought some solution, a small measure of relief, from the incoming parade of intellectually void viral agents at my door.

    lion eating catholic

When I was a child, maybe five- or six-years old, I learned that I was mortal. My great grandmother had recently died and naturally I had many questions, “Where is she?” “When will she be back?” “Gone?”.

The answer I received was devastating and left me in tears. “Everybody dies, that is the way it is.” my father answered. What is the use of being born if life ends. My anxiety level was very high.

Shortly thereafter, perhaps in elementary school, I was introduced to Christianity. A ‘friend’ thought I needed it, most likely because of my foul mouth. As a child my vocabulary was filled with the rankest and most vile tableaus. Christ was introduced in near comic book form within the pages of child-oriented books and pamphlets at Sunday School. Up to that point I thought “Jesus Christ” were cuss words. Still having the memory of my incident with the reality of death fresh in my mind, I found it fantastic that there was an out. Here in these pages of children’s books was the promise of immortality.

I began to pray and didn’t stop praying until in young adulthood. The object of my prayer was not Jesus, it was God. A vague and undefined God, not even, I think, of Christian persuasion. Just God. I had only attended one Sunday School class so the indoctrination was not full blown Jesus worship. Just God.

It is a comforting thought to most people when presented with the possibility of immortality. This is part of the reason religion in general is so widespread. The fear of death is a great persuader. The Christian religion does not fail to take advantage of this fact. That’s the good side of belief, it calms fears about death for those who lack the courage to face it.

    prayer

Prayer gives people a comforting feeling also, in that, it gives them the illusion of control over things which are out of control. That’s the good side, however, it also has a downside. Prayer, at times, becomes a great immobilizer. Instead of taking needed action people pray for a resolution. Sometimes answers seem to come in response to specific prayers. If scrutinized, however, such answers do not seem to originate from any source other than chance. The child dies, the man starves, the crisis deepens, while the things that could have been done, go undone, because one waits for the answer to prayers. How like prey these people who pray seem to be.

The lion is in charge of a harem, so to speak, of lionesses. When he becomes injured, gets old, or is simply killed by another male outright, the new king’s first task is to rid the harem of all the old king’s cubs. A lioness will hide those cubs away. Survival instincts honed by millennia of evolution have the cubs react with silence while they hide in the bushes. Does the lioness hope (pray) that they not be found? If they are not found then the lioness’s hopes (prayers) have been answered. If they are found, then it must have simply been failed hope(prayer), as fate (God) had different plans. If action had been taken instead, and the lionesses had acted in unison, as they do with prey, no male would be able to stand against them. Instead, they wait(vigilance) and hope(pray), that all will turn out well.

    Feeding Christians to the lions

Christians are much like prey to those who would use them. Dictators, kings, and even politicians, manipulate the religious by appealing to their beliefs. That’s what Constantine had in mind when he invented the religion in the first place.

So, if you take all the good from belief and condense it down to one statement that describes all the good belief does for the average mortal human, that statement would have to be something like the following:

Religion is a convenient way for humans to fool themselves into believing they are immortal and in control of nature.

That should cover the fear of death and the fear of forces beyond one’s control.  Don’t you feel better already?

    The Cost of Christianity

  • Alcoholism is a problem to some people. They seem to have a genetic predisposition to the overuse of alcohol.

drunk dogMany a spouse has dealt with this problem in their mate. Some of them, rather than to take a firm hand, think the problem will eventually work itself out. Only seldom does such a problem correct by itself.

In the same way that it is difficult, if not impossible, to argue a point with a drunk, it is difficult, if not impossible, to argue a point with the religious. To accept something on faith is to accept it without evidence. To accept something as true without any evidence is to accept it blindly. All faith held without evidence is blind faith. To logically argue with someone exercising blind faith is as fruitless as arguing with a drunk.

Since such a pursuit, that of arguing with the religious, is wasted investment without dividend, many non-believers adopt the “why can’t we get along” mantra. In many cases this is a commendable avenue. Not, however, in the case of the terminally religious. There are many religious cults and sub cults of Christianity which have the desire, commanded usually by their god, that everyone believe the same way they do. If it were not for the laws of human governments these individuals would force their life styles upon everyone else at the point of a gun.

By proffering accommodation, well-meaning atheists and agnostics are prolonging the existence of a deleterious fraud. They are delaying action to deter the most terrible and heinous scam foisted upon humankind, that of religion.

Why is peaceful coexistence impossible? The religious deal in absolutes. The theist, holding absolutes, considers compromise as the other side giving in, the other side weakening in resolve, and then giving into theist viewpoints. (There is in fact no compromise available to the theist.)

Many religious claim to hold compromise in high regard, and coexistence possible. These particular cults are the result of a lessening of the grip of religion. Passages of the bible which do not presently accommodate modern viewpoints are simply ignored or reduced to the level of a metaphor. It is a possibility, a real possibility, that should these people undergo the proper “revival” atmosphere they would readily readopt the old absolutes. If an individual can have his/her logical mind compromised and made to accept absurdity of any type as real then it is a short trip to acceptance of additional absurdity.

As a result of the inflexibility of the religious, the only solution, for the good of humankind, is the total eradication of religion.

This eradication can be humanely carried out in the form of education. Public education must remain strong and it must remain secular. The theist knows this is a viable way to eliminate noxious belief. Accordingly, they fight public education tooth and nail and advocate private schools and vouchers.

If education is not permitted as means to render religion harmless then the only other avenue is civil war.

    http://www.thecheers.org/Opinion/article_3111_7-reasons-why-religion-is-a-form-of-mental-illness.html#commentbox

Seven reasons why religion is a form of mental illness:

    1) Hallucinations – the person has invisible friends who (s)he insists are real, and to whom (s)he speaks daily, even though nobody can actually see or hear
    these friends.
    (2) Delusions – the patient believes that the invisible friends have magical powers to make them rich, cure cancer, bring about world peace, and will do so eventually if asked.
    (3) Denial/Inability to learn – though the requests for world peace remain unanswered, even after hundreds of years, the patients persist with the praying behaviour, each time expecting different results.
    (4) Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality – the beliefs are contingent upon ancient mythology being accepted as historical fact.
    (5) Paranoia – the belief that anyone who does not share their supernatural concept of reality is “evil,” “the devil,” “an agent of Satan”.
    (6) Emotional abuse – religious concepts such as sin, hell, cause feelings of guilt, shame, fear, and other types of emotional “baggage” which can scar the
    psyche for life.
    (7) Violence – many patients insist that others should share in their delusions, even to the extent of using violence.
